Mayors’ Council statement on the re-election of a BC NDP Government

October 29, 2024

New Westminster – The Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation congratulates Premier elect, David Eby, and the BC NDP for their re-election as government. The Mayors’ Council looks forward to getting to work immediately with the new minister responsible for TransLink when they are sworn in.

“As the region’s leaders responsible for transit planning and with the urgent challenges facing TransLink,” said Mayor Brad West, Chair of the Mayors’ Council, “we are ready to engage the government to discuss the BC NDP’s commitments outlined during the election and ensure that transit in Metro Vancouver will be maintained and expanded to meet the needs of our growing population.”

Among the priorities for the Mayors’ Council with the new government is to identify $3.4 billion annually to support the implementation of the AFE Plan expansion plan, solutions for fixing TransLink’s funding model and a revitalized governance structure if we are going to keep up with the record population growth across Metro Vancouver.

“We are encouraged by the commitments made to transit investment during the election campaign,” said Mayor West. “Now, it is time to turn these commitments into reality and we look forward to all that we will accomplish together.”

Our members include representatives from each of the 21 municipalities in TransLink’s service area, as well as Electoral Area ‘A’ and the Tsawwassen First Nation. It is responsible for approving TransLink’s transportation plans, identifying local funding and negotiating with other levels of government to make those plans a reality.
