Mayors’ Council releases Voters’ Guide outlining party commitments on public transit in Metro Vancouver

October 11, 2024

New Westminster (October 11, 2024) – The Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation today released its 2024 Voters’ Guide ahead of the upcoming B.C. Provincial Election. It is intended to help voters see where each of the major political parties stand on investing in Metro Vancouver’s public transit system and addressing TransLink’s broken funding model.

In August, the Mayors’ Council sent an open letter to the main parties – the BC NDP, Conservative Party of BC and BC Green Party – and all three have acknowledged the importance of expanding transit to meet growing demands on the TransLink system. All parties have also pledged to help address TransLink’s structural deficit and avoid potential transit service cuts that would be necessary if funding isn’t identified in 2025.

The guide features a summary of each party’s responses to four questions and transit-related commitments in their policy platforms.

“We’re pleased that all parties have made significant commitments to invest in public transit, after hearing our concerns that there is a very real risk of seeing transit service cut throughout Metro Vancouver,” said Mayor Brad West, Chair of the Mayors’ Council. “We look forward to getting to work immediately on Day 1 with the next government to fix TransLink’s broken funding model.”

About the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation

The Mayors’ Council is the collective voice of Metro Vancouver residents on transit and transportation. Our members include representatives from each of the 21 municipalities in TransLink’s service area, as well as Electoral Area ‘A’ and the Tsawwassen First Nation. It is responsible for approving TransLink’s transportation plans, identifying local funding and negotiating with other levels of government to make those plans a reality.
